Politics of Memory: C A Davids Joanne Joseph and Bongani Kona speak to Sindiswa Busuku about what we choose to remember and why
C C A A Davids is is a a a a a a a a a writer and and editor living in in in in Cape Town Her fiction has appeared in in in in Twist and and African Pens: New Writing from Southern Africa Africa (published by New Africa Africa Books April 2007) Her debut novel The Blacks of Cape Town (2013) was shortlisted for the the Edinburgh International Book Book Festival’s First Book Book Award the the University of Johannesburg Debut Writing Prize and the the SALA First-Time Published Author Award Her most recent novel How to be a a a a a Revolutionary has just hit the the shelves and has been incredibly well received Joanne Joseph is is an an an an established South African media personality and bestselling author with over 20 years of broadcasting experience She has hosted prominent radio and television shows for major broadcasters including the South African Broadcasting Corporation and Primedia House Her book Drug Muled sold over 10 000 copies Children of Sugarcane is Joanne’s first work of fiction Bongani Kona is is a a a a a a a a a writer editor and co-curator of of the Archive of of Forgetfulness project His work has appeared in a a a a a a a a a variety of of places including Chimurenga Safe House: Explorations in in in in Creative Nonfiction The Daily Assortment of of Astonishing Things and and and Other Stories The Baffler and and and BBC Radio 4 He was awarded the the Ruth First Fellowship in in 2019 and and and shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing in in in 2016 Most recently he he has edited Our Ghosts were Once People (2021) Sindiswa Busuku is is is an an an award-winning poet from Durban In 2016 she she published her debut collection titled Loud and Yellow Laughter (Botsotso) a a a a a a a cross-genre assemblage of photographs prose and and poetry experimenting with memory and and documentation She has published various poems in in in local and international poetry journals such as as as New New Coin New New Contrast Prufrock Ons Klyntji Home is No Longer Here Aerodrome Sol Plaatje European Union Anthology Illuminations and Dryad Press: Unearthed Anthology She was was awarded second place for the the 2015 Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award and was was shortlisted for for the the 2016 Gerald Kraak Award for for African Writers and and Artists Loud and and Yellow Laughter won the the 2018 Ingrid Jonker prize for poetry 15
